Frequently Asked Questions

Here are a number of questions we hear about Pilates and starting a Pilates practice.

Where do I begin?

Your first 3-5 Pilates sessions should be private ones.  This will introduce you to the Pilates equipment--the apparatus--and will allow our instructors to evaluate your strengths and weaknesses.  This will also give you an opportunity to develop your personal goals as you become familiar with the movement, the language, and the philosophy of Pilates.

What next?

Each person comes to Pilates with a different background, a different level of fitness, and a different awareness and connection to his or her body.  After you've taken 3-5 private sessions, you and your instructor will work together to decide if you are ready to move to semi-private sessions or tower classes in addition to, or in place of, private sessions.

What should I wear?

You should wear close-fitting clothes that are comfortable for you to work-out in. Try to avoid over-sized workout clothing that would either get in the way of movement or make it difficult for the instructor to observe your body during the session. You will work-out in socks or bare feet; you will never wear shoes.

How often should I do Pilates?

2-3 times a week is a good balance, though you will see results with only 1 or 2 times a week. This can include private or semi-private sessions, tower and mat classes. You will be pleasantly surprised on how well you feel and look after only a few weeks. Remember, consistency and movement are the keys to change.

Do I have to start with private sessions?  What about mat classes?

You can start your Pilates journey with mat classes, as long as you do not have any major injuries. For those who have significant injuries, start by taking private sessions. This will ensure that your workout is appropriate for your specific needs.

How do I get results?

Ideally, you should work with one of our certified instructors 2-3 times a week. In addition, work independently on the mat routine your instructor has taught you. One of the benefits of Pilates is that you can do it almost anywhere, with no equipment other than a mat or soft carpet.

What kinds of classes or sessions do you offer?
